Access and limits

Authentication: BambooHR API key (HTTP Basic, password x)
Plans and access: API access is included with BambooHR Core; performance goals require Pro or Elite and training records require the Training add-on or plan. Each API key acts as the BambooHR user who created it; field and employee visibility follow that user's access level.
Test environment: Use a BambooHR trial account or a developer-portal test company; there is no shared public sandbox.
Rate limits: BambooHR throttles frequent requests without publishing a fixed quota; from 16 September 2026 throttled requests return HTTP 429 with Retry-After (previously 503).
Pagination: The employee list uses cursor pagination (page[after], up to 2,500 per page). Custom fields, holidays, locations and time tracking projects use page and pageSize with meta.totalPages; ATS applications use page while nextPageUrl is set. Other endpoints return complete results in one response.
Provider events: Global and permissioned webhooks for employee field changes and events. Flows run on demand, on a schedule, or when a scheduled check finds new or changed records.

Before you build a flow

Pay rates, compensation, bonus, commission, national identifiers, bank details, tax, health, vaccination, ethnicity, gender and date-of-birth fields are never requested or returned, even when the API user can read them.
Table rows are limited to jobInfo, employmentStatus, employeeEducation and employeeCertifications; compensation, dependants, emergency contacts, visas and custom tables are not exposed.
Custom reports are requested in JSON only, with the same sensitive-field exclusions.
Employee and company files return metadata only; file downloads and uploads, photos, benefits, dependants, compensation benchmarks, levels and pay bands, total rewards and time-off balance adjustments are not implemented.
Deletes are not implemented (employees, table rows, files, goals, comments, holidays, locations, timesheet entries, training records). Goal close and reopen, time-off approvals other than the existing status change, policy assignment, and employee verification emails are excluded.
Applicant tracking never sends or reads desired salary or job compensation: candidate creates omit desiredSalary, job openings omit compensation and switch the desired-salary question off, and pay questions are dropped from application answers. Resume and cover letter uploads are not implemented.
Datasets, saved company reports and custom tables are not exposed because their fields cannot be filtered for pay, tax, bank and health data before BambooHR returns them.
Holiday pay rules, the training cost field and the pay frequency on list options are never returned.
Creating employees, table rows, time-off requests, goals, comments, training records and types, applicants, job openings and timesheet hours has no idempotency key; uncertain writes are not repeated automatically.
